The beach is full of wonders… but we need to be a little bit careful too. Before we go any further, can you make me a promise?

The Explorer Promise

Tap the promise to make it official!

First things first, the sea. It's beautiful, but it deserves respect. Here's what you need to know
Water Awareness
Margate beach

Red & yellow flags Swim between these it's the safest place
Red flag No swimming not safe today
  • The sea is stronger than it looks It might seem calm, but the sea can change quickly. Always stay close to a grown-up
  • If you get into trouble — FLOAT Lie on your back like a starfish, keep calm, and call for help
  • Tell someone where you are Always make sure a grown-up knows where you're going
Remember: FLOAT. Lie on your back like a starfish, keep calm, and call for help.

Rockpools are my favourite places but they need a gentle explorer. Here's how to visit without causing any trouble!
Rockpool Rules
Rockpool
  • Take it slow on the rocks Rocks can be slippery and sharp, even when they don't look wet. Walk carefully and take your time, no rushing here!
  • Look, don't grab Rockpool creatures are delicate and easily scared. It's much better to watch them than to pick them up.
  • Put everything back If you move a rock, gently place it back the way you found it. Creatures rely on it for shelter.
  • No buckets needed Rockpools are already perfect homes. It's best to leave creatures where they are.
  • Watch the water Waves can reach further than you expect. Keep an eye on the sea while you explore.

Now for the treasure hunt, this is the exciting bit! But a good explorer always knows how to collect carefully
Treasure Safety
Beach treasure
  • Empty shells only If something's living inside, it's their home, not our treasure. Gently pop it back where you found it.
  • Check before you collect Give your find a good look first. If you're not sure what it is, it's best to leave it.
  • Watch for sharp edges Some stones, flint, and sea glass can be sharp. If it could cut you, don't pick it up.
  • Clean hands after exploring After handling beach finds, wash your hands or use sanitiser before eating.
  • Watch the water Waves can reach further than you expect. Keep an eye on the sea while you explore.

And finally, the most important one. This is their home. We're just visiting
Respect Wildlife
Beach wildlife
  • Give animals space If they move away from you, they're telling you you're too close.
  • Look, don't touch Many creatures are delicate or easily scared. Watching is the best way to learn.
  • Put rocks back gently Lots of creatures hide underneath. Put rocks back exactly how you found them.
  • Watch for nesting birds Some birds nest on the ground. If they seem upset or noisy, quietly move away.
  • Don't feed the wildlife Human food can make animals unwell, even if they really want it.
